Domestic Violence Pilot

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this year we are excited to announce our new pilot program, helping victims of domestic violence to keep their pets!

It may seem like a less important issue in the grand scheme of things, but it is very common for people experiencing domestic abuse to stay in these situations because of the fear that the abuser will harm the pet. Many shelters still do not allow pets, and we are all too aware how difficult it can be to find placement for a pet on a short notice! As cat lovers, we understand that cats are a source of comfort, love, and emotional stability. Giving up a cat can add even more stress to the already traumatic situation. And as animal welfare people, we recognize that letting cats reunite with their loving owners is a better outcome than rehoming the animal.

Our new initiative, funding for which was received on a recommendation from the Quinn's Corner Fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey, will assist South Jersey individuals dealing with domestic abuse and who need temporary placement for their cats. The assistance we offer includes foster placement for up to two month, boarding for additional two months, and financial help with housing deposits and basic veterinary care. This is a pilot program, so it is limited in scope, but we hope to grow it in the coming years!
